Sometimes you wish school could just be easier or have a class that could be fun and interesting …or maybe life-changing. Academy classes is your best opportunity to fully invest in your career in a fun way! Through Academy, Lewis High School students can travel to neighboring schools for an opportunity to excel at vocational courses that can bring them a step closer to your future. 

Academy courses are an amazing way to break away from the classroom and step into an engaging educational environment. There are some requirements for eligibility:  Students do need to have a good attendance along with good grades to participate in Academy courses. While Academy classes are a big responsibility, these courses provide excellent potential career development for students’ futures.

Senior Sadia Siddiqa takes Medical Assisting at West Potomac. “Everyone is very friendly…my teacher is also very nice, this year I enjoyed medical assisting a lot,” Siddiqa said.

All neighboring FCPS high schools, including Lewis, can participate in the beauty that is Academy. It’s a great opportunity to see new faces and create everlasting memories with friends that share the same interests and potential career paths as you. 

Senior Husna Hussain appreciates the new community of students she was introduced to through her Academy class, Dental Careers at West Potomac. “I liked how it was a diverse community and people from different schools coming,” Hussain said.

Academy courses are a great way to get a head-start on a career you love, or they can help you discover what you want to do. Personally, as a Lewis student taking Heating & Ventilation at Edison Academy, I really did not know anything about this vocation. But I am very glad to have taken the risk, enrolling in the class. Edison High School’s HVAC classes have helped me find my profession. 

Senior Caitlin Fauls, a Lewis student taking Culinary at Edison Academy speaks about how academy has shaped her future. “It got me into the college that I wanted to go to,” Fauls said.

You can find students who think like you and discover amazing adventures and possibilities together. Academy class allows students to experience incredible things that can’t be learnt in a classroom. By actually placing students in vocational settings, students can immerse themselves into the career, experiencing real on-the-job challenges.

Siddiqa saw pathways open up within her future through Academy. “I get to explore different aspects of health sciences…it opened pathways for me,” Siddiqa said.

Hussain appreciated the experience she gained practicing real-life dental skills. “We could [try out some procedures] on our classmates like polishing teeth and seeing if they had any plaque, which was really funny,” Hussain said.

Academy allows you to take your skills and your education to the next level! Regardless of the class, academy students can go on field trips and participate in competitions. In these competitions, you can work together with your peers and win awards! Academy courses also offer opportunities to get certification for work, which provides a footing into your career path.

There are so many opportunities when you open the door to Academy. Classes from Culinary to Criminal Justice! There is something for everyone in Academy. When it comes to course selection, take a chance, dive into the hands on experience and find your future!
