Dust off your old Dapper Dan pink suits and flapper dresses along with your copies of the well-beloved book that many of you studied in Honors English 1o! From November 16 through November 19, Lancer Theatre will present its fall play production: a stage adaptation of the classic American novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This script was adapted for the stage and is being directed by English and World History teacher Mr. Charles DeLong. The show’s Charleston and Black Bottom dance choreography is contributed by none other than Lewis’ popular dance team coach Ms. Erin Headson.
Set in the Prohibition Era of the 1920’s, affectionately referred to as the Roaring Twenties, The Great Gatsby is a story of obsessive love, power, greed, and to what lengths human beings will sometimes go to acquire those things (or hold onto them). Told through the lens of the narrator Nick Carraway, we learn what the passionate Jay Gatsby is all about and why he has established for himself the life mission of once again earning the love and affection of one Daisy Buchanan. He will do anything to have her. Anything.
In the course of the evening will also be many songs from the 1920s era and earlier, including the aforementioned “Charleston” and “Black Bottom.” Additionally, we’ll hear such vintage classic songs as “Who’s Sorry Now?,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” “The Blue Danube Waltz,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”, “Am I Blue,” and “What’ll I Do?”
The cast features senior Jeffrey Waddington as Jay Gatsby, senior Evelyn Roberts as Daisy Buchanan, senior MJ Quizon as Nick Carraway, senior Delia Hunt as Jordan Baker and the Torch Singer, senior Jason Rivas Manzanares as Tom Buchanan, senior Natalie Ly as Myrtle Wilson, and junior Roman Spinale as George Wilson. Piano accompaniment will be provided by Ms. Amy Conley. Lilliette Sabry is the assistant director and stage manager for the production.
The Great Gatsby will be performed in the Lewis High School auditorium. Show times are at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, Friday, November 17, and Saturday, November 18 with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 19, 2023. Tickets are $10.00 general public and $5.00 for students/faculty/seniors with an ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door. For further information, please email Mr. DeLong at [email protected]. And here’s a little secret: one of the performances will offer a huge surprise! You’ll just have to come see what that surprise turns out to be! Just knock on the door and say, “Joe sent me!”
